Emily stepped out of the boat, smiling and waiving to the Ferry Godmother as she turned to head back up the path. The meadow was a riot of color and song; the flowers seemed to bend toward her and the birds seemed to sing to her.
"Seemed?" cawed a raucous voice. "SEEMED?"
Emily turned to the direction of the voice, but saw only a crow.
"ONLY a crow?" repeated the voice. Emily noticed it had a decided Down Under accent. The crow was staring at her with a demanding look.
"Oh!" exclaimed Emily. "It really is you!"
"You didn't think it was the silly wren, I hope," responded the crow.
"What's your name?" Emily asked, hoping she wasn't being too forward.
"Russell, of course," he replied, sounding surprised she didn't know that.
"How do you always know what I'm thinking?" asked Emily.
"Just one of my many talents," said Russell, trying to look modest but failing. He cleared his throat. "Your real boyfriend is on this show. You remember that, right?"
Emily looked down at the baby bunny and chicken that were playing just a few feet from her. "I do," she said hesitantly.
"But you don't remember who he is, do you?"
"Um... I'm sure it will come to me," Emily replied.
"Fleiss cast a spell on you to make you forget," said Russell. "Unfortunately, I can't undo it. His spells are very powerful."
"How will I know to choose him?" Emily asked, real consternation in her voice.
"You'll have to hope that true love really does overcome everything," said Russell, the raucous sound having left his voice. "Fleiss wouldn't believe that one."
